JOB SUMMARY

This position utilizes volunteers to assist the Office of the Sheriff in the performance of specific duties that benefit the Office of the Sheriff and the community, without compensation, and with limited authority and responsibilities throughout Queen Anne’s County.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

-  Auxiliary Deputies are called upon to supplement police work as needed.

- They take part in police work that provides services that are essential to public welfare and safety.

  • Ceremonies
  • Crime Prevention Activities
  • Crime Scene Management
  • Fingerprinting
  • McGruff Crime Dog
  • Motorist Assistance
  • Security Surveys
  • Speed Trailer Deployments
  • Traffic Details
  • Fairs and Carnivals
  • Parades
  • Park Patrols

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 Auxiliary Deputies need the ability to read and interpret documents such as statutes, regulations, safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals written in English.  Auxiliary Deputies should be able to write routine reports and correspondence.  They need to possess the ability to verbally communicate effectively and persuasively with the general public people and to present information accurately and concisely to other volunteers and supervisors of the Office of the Sheriff.

Auxiliary Deputies should be able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Auxiliary Deputies convey orders and directions to individuals in a manner which invokes a willingness to comply.  They need to respond quickly to changing work environment conditions.  They should be able to function under conditions which could expose volunteers to serious personal injury.  Auxiliary Deputies must be alert under circumstances, which normally encourage lethargy.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

The basic qualifications for this volunteer position are as follows: High school diploma or general education degree (GED), Must be a United States Citizen, no criminal convictions, possess a valid driver’s license, capable of working a minimum of 8 hours of service each month, have a telephone, submit to a criminal history review, and submit to a mandatory drug and alcohol test.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the volunteers are regularly required to sit and talk or hear.  The volunteers are frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance.  The volunteers are occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.

Be in good physical condition as witnessed by a Doctor’s Certificate.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a variety of conditions and is often outside.  Volunteers regularly operate a motor vehicle. They often work outside in different weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, on occasion, is very loud when exposed to sirens, air or gasoline operated equipment, and helicopter engine noise.

COMMENTS

This position is designated as a VOLUNTEER position.

Any volunteers in this position may be asked to work weekends and holidays.

Volunteers must conform to applicable Agency policies and safety rules.
