Sheriff Gary Hofmann

Sheriff Gary Hofmann, his wife Olga, and daughters Alexandra and Karina, live in Centreville.  The Sheriff also has two older children, Laura and Joey, who attended Queen Anne's County Public Schools and are now raising families of their own. 

Sheriff Hofmann has served as the Sheriff for Queen Anne’s County, Maryland, since his initial election in 2006. He was re-elected in 2010, 2014, 2018 and began his 5th term as Sheriff in December 2022. With over 32 years of service at the Queen Anne's County Office of the Sheriff and more than 39 years in law enforcement, he has held a range of leadership roles in both the patrol and support divisions, including patrol supervisor, community policing/crime prevention supervisor, Sergeant and now Sheriff. 

He is a certified instructor for the Maryland Police Training Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as well as an adjunct instructor at WorWic Community College. His training topics include critical incident response, active shooter preparedness, community policing, crime prevention, gang awareness, domestic violence, traffic safety, scams and fraud prevention.

Under Sheriff Hofmann’s leadership, the agency adopted the mission: “Prompt, professional, and courteous police services with a no-tolerance to crime approach,” emphasizing his commitment to community-based policing. 

Sheriff Sheriff Hofmann is actively involved in the community, supporting numerous programs and events including the Queen Anne’s County Council of Arts, Maryland Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge, Chesterwye, the Kent Island Federation of Arts, Fello (formally ARCC) of Maryland, Queen Anne’s County Goes Purple, and various faithbased initiatives. He is a strong advocate for families facing mental health and substance use challenges and works closely with immigrant communities to ensure they feel supported and heard.

He previously served as the Second Vice President of the Maryland Crime Prevention
Association and was appointed by Governor Martin O’Malley to the State Board of Victim Services, with continued appointments under Governor Larry Hogan. He was recently reappointed by Governor Wes Moore to the Maryland Victims’ Services Board, continuing a long-standing advocacy for victims and vulnerable populations.

In September 2025, Sheriff Hofmann was inducted as the President of the Maryland Sheriffs’ Association, making his second time serving in this leadership role, having also served as President in 2011. He also serves on the Maryland Sheriff’s Homeland Security Board, chairs the Queen Anne’s County Drug Task Force, and participates in numerous committees including the Maryland Sheriffs’ Human Trafficking Task Force, the Queen Anne’s County Council for Children and Youth, Partnerships for Children & Families, and the Tobacco and Drug Free Coalition.

Beyond his law enforcement duties, Sheriff Hofmann was a founding member of Talisman Therapeutic Riding in 2012 and has supported various charitable causes, including the Kinera Foundation Relief Fund and other organizations throughout his career.

A proud graduate of the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development School, the 92nd
Session of the National Sheriff’s Institute, and the FBI National Academy Class #236,
Sheriff Hofmann holds educational backgrounds in Business Administration and Criminal Justice. He attended the University of Virginia and was honored as the Centreville Rotary Club’s Citizen of the Year in 2024.
