DETAILS:  On Wednesday January 24, 2018 at approximately 7:48 AM, custodial staff at the Kent Island High School discovered a hand-written message on a bathroom stall inside of the school. The message stated that the unknown author wished to “bomb the school,” but provided no specific intent or other information. Staff subsequently alerted law enforcement, and began standard procedures for escorting students safely from the building. The Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the Maryland State Police Special Operations Division (K-9 Units) responded to the school to conduct an investigation. K-9 teams specifically trained in explosives detection were deployed to assist with the search. Law enforcement personnel also were present with the students as they were relocated, to ensure their continued safety. Investigation revealed that the hand-written message appeared to have been done as a hoax, and there was no identifiable threat to school safety. Students were allowed to return to the school campus by 9:30 AM., and the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office maintained a presence at the school for the remainder of the day. The Sheriff’s Office considers any and all potential threats to school and student safety a very serious matter, and will be investigating this incident to identify the author of the message.
